The assignment for the second season of How To with John Wilson was not to reinvent a completely new look, but to evolve from S1 in a cohesive and tonally similar way. Since the show had established a fan base from S1, storytelling was not a priority therefore we could concentrate solely on aesthetic.
Our main approach was finding a similar feeling composition that mirrored S1, making it cohesive, while also bringing something new to the table. Based on how well the client responded to the graphic poppy nature of S1 art, we stayed within that world, exploring different background colors and simplistic shots of New York city life. It was also important to avoid anything pandemic-related and also not go too far into the illustrated world.
The result was a well balanced piece of key art that felt cohesive to S1 but different enough to convey the fact that it’s a second season. The copy line also succinctly and efficiently conveys this, all while remaining in Wilson’s voice. As with S1 art, the client was extremely pleased with the result and the show continues to perform very well.
