This class assignment was to design a promotional poster for the UNT OperaWorks upcoming 2023 performance of Gorges Bizet's opera, Carmen. We worked with the company director who briefed the class with a description of the production and explained the sort of things he wanted in a poster. The goal was to attract a new younger and diverse audience to the performance.

In the opera, Carmen is a beautiful peasant girl who flirts with danger and being the main character of the opera, I chose to highlight her as the main focus of my poster. At the time of creating the poster a singer hadn’t been cast so I chose to illustrate Carmen in silhouette. The rose is a symbol that is used throughout the play and acts as a double meaning, illustrating Carmen’s passion while also foreshadowing her ultimate death. I felt the poster needed to convey the story’s intense drama, so I included the dagger to convey the powerful ending.

At the end of the project, the director of the opera brought in the company’s marketing team to look at the class's posters. Together with the professor, they selected four finalists to be used as promotional material for the 2023 tour of Spring performances.
