Contributing to positive career choices is a critical part of our mission, and one increasingly promising opportunity in that regard is the emerging field of dental therapy. Akin to nurse practitioners in physicians' offices, dental therapists perform some of the basic services that have traditionally been reserved for licensed dentists, allowing for greater access to care in areas where dental therapy is legal. While the implications for underserved communities are significant, this growing trend also is expanding career opportunities for dental hygienists, many of whom are very capable of offering these services. We needed to convey this information in an attention-grabbing, thought-provoking way, so we started by identifying what is primarily at stake: A gap exists between the need for oral healthcare and what is available. We selected imagery of a canyon to represent that gap, and a bridge over it to represent the potential impact of dental therapy. For the person crossing the bridge, we chose a healthy, fit, active woman taking a long stride - representing our readership with this potential opportunity.
Working with my illustrator we researched and collaborated on creating a dynamic illustration depicting the struggles of this topic.
With such an impactful spread, we believe we did this article justice in capturing not only the audience's attention but also their appreciation for the importance of the topic and what is at stake.
