An optical alphabet set that is made for VR and AR applications. This practice includes motion images, a 3D printed display board, a 360 VR video, and a set of AR prints that can be triggered by smart devices.
Approach
In a virtual space, rules of physics can be broken. Letters and messages can be easily placed and modified in the virtual landscape and can create interesting spatial relationships with the viewers’ position and the angle of their viewpoints. I built this set of 3D letterforms in modeling software using the technique of optical illusions. Each letter has fragments of strokes that float in space, but can only be read as letterforms from a certain angle.
Results
A full 90-page graduate thesis book called "The Fifth Medium" was written based on this project, and it is a stepping stone for more profound research towards the dimensional mediums. Inspired by this project, I believe that 3D letter systems will be a rising field for a future with extended concepts of 'screens'. The project received comments such as "very inspiring" and "technically well-executed". The thesis book was welcomed by the audience.
