GALACTICA & LARS WILLNAT
Prof. Lars Willnat grew up in Germany and later taught at The Chinese University of Hong Kong
before moving to the states to continue his research, studies and teaching in Asian media, public opinion, media effects, and political and international communication. As a John Snow endowed professor, his focus is driven by cross-national and comparative survey research, but his quantitative side contrasts with his laid back and quick-witted persona, a significant concept in Galactica’s high-contrast approach. The typeface’s thick, angular strokes pair with hairline strokes in an homage to bar and line graphs, and Prof. Willnat’s love for Star Trek inspired the slanted cross bars that mimic the angled rings of Saturn. Galactica also draws from blackletter, a classification of type strongly associated with Germany, in which no arms, stems nor bowls have any curve.
