Since this project was my thesis, I decided to expand on something that I experience fairly frequently: travel and flying. I decided to brand my own airline called Flyte. Flyte was solely fueled by my want to make interactions during plane rides more entertaining and personalized to each individual user. I had the freedom to decide on a concept and the deliverables of my choosing, as long as I can fit it within the semester schedule. This project was inspired by the bright and trendy colors popping up in current design, and consists of set of colorful stationery, a custom luggage tag, a boarding pass, as well as a fun animated video that explains how to interact with the plane monitors and mobile app.
I wanted the design and feel of the plane monitors and mobile app to be something completely unique in the world of airlines. I made the brand clean and simple, but with a pop of color. Overall, I wanted the design of the screens to follow what I already established in the brand, so I used the colors as overlays over images and videos, and I developed iconography based off of the geometric vector style of the logo. Aside from creating a brand that pops, I rethought the way users interact with the content available on airplanes by allowing people to login through Facebook. Content is filtered based on the different things people liked on Facebook, and a feed of content is generated once a user logs in. People are then able to filter content further by specifying the types of things they want to see (i.e. Movies, food, and travel tips), and they can favorite items in case they want to access content later. The mobile app ties into this feature. Users can access the content that they favorited once they are off of the plane and they can get a preview of the content they might see on their next flight.
In order to show everything I developed and designed, I created an animated video that explains how the interactions work with both the plane monitors and mobile app. It goes into depth about each screen, and what the Flyte system offers a user while keeping the fun, colorful style of the brand. I also developed stationery, a luggage tag, and boarding pass to show different applications from screen to print. I was able to develop patterning out of the logo, and I used all of the bright colors to bring life to something that is normally a train-wreck to look at.
