I have always been interested in the material and experiential potential of typography. Build It Up to Burn It Down is the first in a series of branded typographic posters. The posters smell like smoke and the tactile surface reflects the process.
Custom laser-cut acrylic letterforms were used to make silicone molds. The silicone molds were then used to create wax letterforms for ceramic shell molds. Using the ceramic shell molds, I cast custom Univers Condensed Bold bronze brands. The brands were heated using a small torch. For the words "build" and "burn", I placed leaves between the brand and the surface of the paper. This created unique scorch patterns.
Branding is an imperfect and often unpredictable process. However, the beauty is in the imperfections.
