The assignment was to create a poster announcing the Urban Dance Festival in Harlem, NYC. The event seeks to connect old and new urban dance forms that originated in the city. The posters needed to capture the energy and history of social dance in a fresh, dynamic visual language.
My goal was to create an interplay between old and new - the roots of social dance in NYC, the Lindy Hop, with contemporary street dance. The single figure is symbolic of the highly personal improvisation of both eras, where dancers create their own unique physical language, while the overall composition gives a fresh take on dance contest posters from the 1930's.
The poster was received well by both generations who attended the event, making a connection a diverse cross section of dancers and dance fans.
