I wanted to tell the lesser known, original stories of classic fairy tales that are decidedly darker than the well-known Disney versions.
“Drizella” is a modern re-interpretation of the classic fairy tale Cinderella, portrayed from the evil step sister’s perspective. My creative team shot a video short of one scene in the story that shows perhaps the “evil" character Drizella may just be a bit misunderstood as she faces a dark decision.
In the original version of the story, Drizella cuts off her toes to jam her feet into the golden (not glass) shoe. Symbolic visuals in this video brood the tension and forces surrounding her desperate decision. The shadow of the swaying tree is Cinderella’s mother, haunting Drizella. The birds in the original story peck out Drizella’s eyes. This video short “Drizella” is part of a larger body of work “Modern Fairy Tales”, a modern re-interpretation in narrative, style, and dark humour.
