This is a follow on from my South African portraits series, which highlights the problems and adversity that teenagers face trying to get a decent education in South Africa. Those Portraits are here: http://www.greggfoto.com/personal/#/quiet/ and the stories are here: http://www.greggfoto.com/zastories
Inspiring to learn: I want to illustrate that it is possible, when you study and work hard, to realise your dreams. I want to demonstrate the relationship between having a good education and being able to fulfill your dreams in terms of having a successful and rewarding chosen career.
I want to photograph and interview successful people. Success as defined in terms of being able to fulfill your potential and to be able to choose a career that you have a passion for.
I think that success is also intertwined with motivation and I am quite interested in some of Maslow’s theories on motivation and fulfilling your potential, such as , ”The desire for self-fulfillment, namely the tendancy for the individual to become actualized in what he is potentially”, and also, “What a man can be, he must be!”
I like the concepts and relationships between vision, courage and determination. I would like to try sow the seeds that encourage people to learn and study hard. To encourage people to follow their passions and dreams and to study hard to achieve them. I would like to show the photographed subjects as potential role models, demonstrating that anything is possible, to give young people a vision of what is possible.Vision is not worth very much unless you have the courage to actually do something to enable that vision. People need to have the courage to take the first step and make a plan to realize that vision.Determination, tenacity and hard work, i.e. studying hard, is then required to achieve those goals and fulfill that vision.Hopefully the people that I photographed in my first project (ZA portraits), and others, can look at these portraits and stories and see that there is hope and that they too might have a vision. If they are determined enough then they too can fulfill their dreams. I want to inspire people to study hard and learn.
South Africa has so many problems as my “South African portraits” project highlights, and I firmly believe that education is a key part of the solution. I have two very young daughters and their education is vitally important to me.
