This is a typeface for general retail release. It is an exploration of the Renaissance “old-style” typefaces with a focus on the lesser-known punchcutters and type-founders, i.e., those that are not Garamont.
The Display Roman minuscules are drawn from Van den Keere’s “Canon Romain”, reproduced from Plantin’s Folio Specimen in Type Specimen Facsimiles II. The majuscules are drawn partially from Simon de Colines’s caps, as reproduced in various H. Vervliet books.
The Text Romans are more of a hybrid, taking from the first and second generation Garalde’s. Naturally, I’m telescoping my taste through the ages in reverse order, from now until then, as my personal experience has been digital, photo, metal.
The Italics, too, are a hybrid.
The result is a contemporary, fresh take on the Old-style/Garalde genre. The approach is traditional and time-worn, but the results are modern.
