"The United States’ detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have become emblematic of the gross human rights abuses perpetrated by the U.S. Government in the name of fighting terrorism. At Guantanamo, the U.S. government sought to hold detainees in a place neither U.S. nor international law applied – – President Obama is right to say that ‘we cannot exempt ourselves from the rules that apply to everyone else,’ but for too long, the U.S. government has perpetuated a counter-terrorism strategy that has thrown the most basic human rights standards by the wayside.” (www.amnestyusa.org)
I wanted to raise awareness on the fact that despite promises Guantanamo detention facilities are still open.
The whole issue seems murky to me: prisoners of war / war on terror, violated human rights, reasons for international/american presence and interest in Middle-East… I wanted to convey this murkiness, and at the same time be clear on the fact that we must try to see what’s really going on.
The ideas came together in this oil spill / eye / prisoner of war holding his hands over his head.
