The Department of Art invited Joey Hannaford to campus to present a lecture on her work and host two typography/lettering workshops. I was tasked with designing the promotional poster.
Joey is an accomplished designer, calligrapher, and letterpress artist. She has a particular affinity for wood type and a true appreciation for pushing the discipline of letterpress. She engages in many experimental letterpress practices.
To make her poster, I gathered an assortment of vintage wood type from the letterpress studio. I carefully made silicone molds of the vintage pieces. Next, I used the silicone molds to cast the forms in resin. The resin captured a great amount of detail, including the wood grain of the original vintage wood type. The resin forms were sanded, arranged, lit from behind, and photographed. The secondary text was added digitally.
Joey's poster reflects her love for typography and letterpress art while paying homage to her tireless pursuit to push and reinvent the medium.
