NY Design Week (NYCxDESIGN) is a collaboration between New York City Economic Development Corporation, City agencies, the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and a steering committee composed of some of the City’s most renowned design institutions, retailers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, curators, educators, editors and designers.
frog design challenged New York's creative community to “Design a dartboard. No rules,” in what culminated as a charity auction and party called DartxDesign. The dartboards were displayed at the event and were auctioned off with all proceeds going to Art Start, a non-profit that brings the creative arts to underserved and homeless youth. The task was to bring this event to life, from constructing the challenge and naming it, to its visual identity and experience strategy of the event.
The visual identity of the event pays homage to the many types of dartboard grids, and does so with a playful point system. On one dartboard, landing a dart on a rabbit will get you a lucky 7 points, or a pie for 3.14159265359… or so points. On another, darts fall into a striped infinity. These visuals flexed from newsprint posters, to an 8-screen video that greeted guests, bidding materials and instructions, tote bags, invitations and more.
In the beginning, we wanted to reinforce the sentiment that designing a dartboard is open for interpretation and prompted participants with custom-made darts as invitation to the challenge. At the event, it was especially pertinent to bring energy to the physical space and clarity to the auction process.
22 designers across disciplines — from KARIM RASHID, Alex Trochut and Pentagram Design to MakerBot and SHoP Architects — accepted the challenge. On display at the event were a virtual reality game, books, prints, a balloon and so many other interpretations of dartboards. DartxDesign raised the largest amount that ArtStart has received from a single fundraising event.
