National was one of my first typefaces, I didn’t know much and was very green. National was released in 2007. In 2008 it was updated to include 3 additional weights, Thin/Light/Black. National 2, this typeface, is a complete redrawing and expansion of the original idea.
My drawing & typeface-planning skills have improved markedly since 2007. I grew uncomfortable with National’s awkward weight range and the quality of the outlines. I am still happy with the overall atmosphere and style, though. I wanted to add narrower styles, but didn’t want to follow the weight range and certain structural decisions from a decade ago. So, the only option was to redraw the lot. It was like pulling teeth.
National 2 has fewer weights than National, but a better distribution of the weight range. The outlines and spacing are much more refined. There are 3 additional width families: Narrow, Condensed and Compressed, all with italics. There are 64 fonts in total, Klim’s biggest family to date. National 2 is more refined and comprehensive, but has the same workmanlike qualities and atmosphere of the original National.
