When Francis Ford Coppola was preparing to shoot The Godfather, he took a razor blade to Mario Puzo's book, cut out every page, and pasted them into a notebook. Then he scribbled in the margins and underlined important passages, while slashing others. For each section he planned to film, he included notes on synopsis, texture, tone, and pitfalls to avoid. That 700-plus-page notebook has been made available for the first time in this exact reproduction, which also includes an introduction by Coppola himself, never before seen photographs, alternate casting lists, pre-production meeting memos etc.
It was crucial to the authenticity of the project that this was as close to an exact replica of the original as possible (especially with the USD $500 price-tag), so a huge part of this was as much a production job as a design task. The additional design aspects came with the cloth-bound box, the introduction booklet design and cover, and the envelope with the additional ephemera. The limited edition's goal was also to help publicity on our regular edition ($60), now in it's 3rd printing.
The limited edition has already sold half of the 2500 signed copies, which is rather good considering these are priced at $500. Part of the limited edition’s purpose was also to help create awareness and publicity for the regular edition, which has done exceptionally well, a New York Times Bestseller that's sold over 25,000 copies since releasing in December.
