I was asked to make a painting based off of a song, the goal being to capture the mood and message. I chose to paint "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" by Air Supply. I specifically chose to illustrate the second verse because I was inspired by the imagery.
I started by sketching my ideas in pencil, scanning them, and then I combined elements of each sketch into a complete image. After I had the base, I painted over it in Photoshop, first in black and white, and then in color. Throughout each step I tried to incorporate the energy and passion of the song so that it illustrated the mood as well as the words.
The goal of this piece was to represent the song, but in the professional world the goal of posters or album covers is to create interest in the music. This project was successful because when I show it to people they either say, "This fits the song well" or "Now I want to know the song!"
