The goal of this stamp project was to honor Sarah Vaughan, one of America’s greatest singers, proficient in both jazz and pop, with a stamp in the U.S. Postal Service’s Music Icons series.
Working in oil on illustration board coated with gesso, the artist used moody, bluesy jazz colors and a close-up of Sarah Vaughan in performance to evoke the rich tones of the singer’s voice and her sultry stage presence.
Twenty-five million stamps were produced and were very well received. Within nine months 58% of the total print run had sold. This stamp issuance was very popular in the world of jazz and garnered a great deal of media attention.
