The goal of this assignment was to develop an effective visual design system that is displayed in a series of posters. Utilizing the skill of creating compositions of typography and image, we determined how those elements convey a message to the viewer. My topic for the posters featured the Jazz Pioneers Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton, Mary Lou Williams, and Charlie "Bird" Parker.
My concept explores the styles of jazz that each Pioneer formed. Morton explored the swing style of jazz music, Williams composed prominent smooth jazz sounds, and Parker invented the bebop style of jazz music. Using only type, I wanted to resemble these styles of jazz in each of the posters.
After a process, my posters resulted in a classic black and white color palette with elements of type that resembled each Pioneer's jazz style. I printed on a silver metallic paper that helped to emphasize the type and to represent the shine of their instruments. Learning what elements to vary from poster to poster in the series shaped them into the final product.
