Poster for Jeff Talks, an event in form of design, photography, film, architecture, writing and reading related talks. I am assigned to design a poster for Can Başkent's lecture titled "Publishing eBooks in the Land of eBook Piracy". He is an Istanbul born activist and ebook publisher, studied mathematics and philosophy in Ankara, logic in Amsterdam obtained his doctorate in computer sciences in New York, worked in a philosophy institute related to Sorbonne and École Normale Supérieure, worked as a researcher at INRIA and he is the first researcher from Turkey to earn a research fund from the Institute for Anarchist Studies in the United States. He published Conscientious Objection Writings, Species and Genera, Veganism: Ethics, Politics and Struggle. He participated actively in many social movements including Food not Bombs and started a campaign called Vegan Meal for Osman Evcan. In the beginning of 2011 he founded Propaganda Publishing.
There were two constraints for the project, the poster should be 48x68 cm and black & white only. After the research, I boiled down the information I gathered to eight keywords (Zine spirit, Original Work, Aggressive Acquisition, Propaganda, Anarchism, Avant-garde, Activism & "Free" Sale). My concept was to merge the visual feeling of street propaganda with DIY quality. I staged an outdoor shot and added the hand sketched typography I made. I didn't used any fonts and even re-draw the client logo (back side of the poster) to make it as zinelike as possible. The sprayed text is also genuine.
The overall reaction from the client, lecturer and participants was very positive and satisfactory for me as a designer.
