Hyatt Regency New Orleans recently underwent a $200,000,000 expansion program which placed the front door where the back door had been, and hired a sign vendor to redo the signage. The problem was that the inherent issues that existed with the original hotel were complicated by the much more complex expansion. Lorenc+Yoo Design was asked to redesign and rethink the present program which was in place for only 6 months.
Our task was to analyze the hotel and convention center and to ease the wayfinding issues by having the wayfinding direct from node to node and to smaller sections once you arrived at that node Our task was SIMPLIFY the nomenclature by recommending a simpler naming structure for the hotels components, By DEFINING the areas of the nodes so that clarity of spaces existed, and by ASSISTING in wayfinding concerns at decision points. In the lobby our task was to get the guests to their rooms which was a complex journey.
We provided signage in major decision points. The signage program had to be much more defined and bold in the spaces as opposed to a background element with too much information. Effective signage for complex environments reflects on the facility positive memory during the visit and certainly the positive memory to incur a return visit without any bad wayfinding memories.
