Produce a poster for the university’s performing arts department’s fall show.
The SCAD Performing Arts students enjoy cutting-edge resources, connected faculty, celebrated guests and world-renowned events. They can capitalize on multiple opportunities to showcase their talents, including as part of the many productions the department puts on each year. For Fall 2016, the department selected The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a story about an eclectic group of six adolescents vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime while disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives. In the end, six spellers start the competition, but there is only one winner.
After reading a synopsis of the play, the designer quickly developed an idea for the poster: a simple illustrative graphic. The artwork shows a student moving forward through a door as if moving on to the next chapter. This was accomplished while maintaining specific display requirements from the organizers about the author’s name and other artistic credits. Though the design reflects the simple concept of a student moving forward, as happens when a correct spelling is delivered during the bee, it also incorporates the designer’s intent to have a humorous element to reflect the play’s comedic storyline.
All six of the play’s performances were sold out.
